First, get a new doctor. Thyroid cancer is easily determined by a biopsy to the mass. Sounds like your sister may have a goiter rather than a cancer. That can also be treated.

Thyroid cancer is typically slow growing. Usually manifesting in older individuals after 20 or more years of growth. It is the only cancer that can be treated with a "silver bullet" T-131. An iodine isotope that kills only thyroid tissue. My daughter manisfested when she was 24, very rare. She takes Synthroid everyday for the rest of her life, but she will live many years. A normal lifespan.

But find doctor who is willing to diagnose her problem and treat it. By the way my daughter is now 42.

It is a scary thing. But the outcome is quite good. If a person has to have cancer this is the one to have. The toughest part is post treatment and regulating the hormones that have to be medically replaced daily. Ask questions.
