Testsicular Cancer Follow-ups

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Jun 23, 2001 1:07 pm

In July 1999 my husband had a testicle removed that was cancer. He followed with chemotherapy because it had escaped through the vascular cord into the blood stream but had not spread anywhere else. He has had CT follow-ups with contrast every three months for almost two years now and has been clear with no sign of recurrence. However, we are becoming worried about the constant exposure to radiation. We have heard there is an increased risk radiation induced leukemia. Is this true? And, should he start spacing his CT followups further apart? How far? Please give us your opinion. Do the follow ups this often benefit him more or hurt him more?

After two years it is probably ok for him to begin tapering the CT scans to every 6 months and to follow blood work every 1-2 months. The amount of radiation to which he is exposed during the CT scans is very small and there is no information of which I am aware which would suggest that he is at increased risk of developing leukemia as a consequence of CT scan exposure. Thank you for using oncologychannel.
