Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

About a month ago, I had a mole removed from my stomach. It kinda dark.... looked irritated (red around it). Dr. sent it off biopsy... first lab , couldn't agree on it . So he had it sent to a lab in hington. Today, he told me y said it is "Spitz Nevus" y would like a little more of skin from around a. I have been researching about spitz nevus now, it seems to me sometimes y can not difficiat between melanoma in some cases..HOw can I be sure y diagnosed my mole right? , if it is just Spitz Nevus, do y have to have more skin, if is not considered to be cancerous? Thanks in advance......just wanted something to work .....when bringing up se questions to my Dr. Have a great day *smile*

It is true that a Spitz nevus can have some features of a melanoma, but a competent pathologist will be able to differentiate. It is also true that a Spitz nevus is benign and should not require additional skin to be removed. At the same time, there are growths which "don't seem to read our textbooks". Sometimes a mole can have features of different growths and be difficult to diagnose with certainty. In your case, what you have does not sound malignant, but I would recommend that You get the extra piece taken out. The scar will not be much worse, and the peace of mind is worth it. They will evaluate this second piece to make sure they have not missed anything.
