Mom diagnosed with NHL, no insurance

Post a new topicby nattygirl69 on Mon Mar 23, 2009 2:25 pm

Can anyone direct me to any sort of assistance or groups that may help with the medical bills she has already endured during her 6 day emergency room visit and now the chemo that will be coming. Problem is - she is only 62 and doesn't qualify for Medicare or Medical, or Social Security. Her marrow test will be completed in the next few days, so we will know exactly what treatment she will need. I am soooo scared for her, as they believe she has had this for MANY years, and I feel as though her time may have run out, even if she could go into remission. I am trying to read as much as possible, and stumbled across this site/forum. I pray that someone can help guide us to financial assistance, and information. I know thinking positive helps, but she is so stressed out over the bills, she is not focusing on getting better and what the future can still hold.

I will pray for all of you who have been diagnosed with this nasty disease -

Thank you for reading, and I hope someone can help.

Not knowing the full circumstances here are some thoughts from my history- apply for Social Security Disability-they will most likely deny you BUT be persistent. In 2005 I applied for SSI Disability and received retroactive payment to date of diagnosis 10/2000. I was 58 in 2005 and 53 in 2000. I had just been downsized and was apparently eligible. After a lengthy (45 minutes or so) interview with SSI, they apparently did their research on me, took my Oncologist diagnosis and prior chemo regime and approved me. Again the first claim was denied. You must be persistent. Hopefully, they will with 60 days or so as I recall my situation start the payments AND provide you with Medicare Parts A and B card. You'll also need suppplemental insurance to cover the balance of 20% and some kind of Medicare Part D drug plan. Medicare pays 80%. Don't take no for an answer. If your mom qualifies under the SSI guidlines she may stand a chance. Also, the financial folks at her treatment facility should be able to provide some assistance and or direction. The American Cancer Society in you area should be able to help. Wish her well and continue the fight.

I will look into your suggestions. Thank you so very much. We have found an insurance company that will take her regardless of the pre-existing condition and it is fairly reasonable. Bit late for the 6 day hospital stay though (they won't retro it) I expected that. At least it will help with future bills until we get the other going. So we will try - thanks again and god bless!
