Mixed Small & Large Cell Lung CancerHello,
I have been recently diagnosed with Mixed Small & Large Cell Lung Cancer that has been confirmed by two pathology labs. The biopsy shows that it is high-grade and very aggressive. There have been no symptoms so far... The only evidence of cancer has been a large (5cm x 6cm) Mediastinal mass that I have been told is inoperable by two different thoracic surgeons. This is after a CT scan, a PET scan, a brain MRI and a full bone scan. I know that this form of cancer has symptoms and characteristics of both SCLC & NSCLC but can anyone tell me what they may be? Does this form of cancer have a worse prognosis than small cell and non-small cell? If so, can you explain why? Does anyone know if it is very responsive to treatment like SCLC or is it more treatment resistant like NSCLC? What is considered the most effective treatment at the moment? I would like to become more pro-active in understanding my condition and deciding my course of treatment so any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mike
Re: Mixed Small & Large Cell Lung CancerMike these are difficult questions for me to answer without evaluating you myself. The symptoms you may experience are chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of appetite and many others. It is difficult to predict which ones you will have. Your oncologist should be the one answering these questions for you regarding treatment. The oncologist has the most information regarding the tumor and your health and therefore is in the best position to pick the best therapy for you.
