Lung Cancer

My mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer about this time last year. She had not been feeling or breathing well and tests revealed spots all over her lungs. The oncologist never gave a life expectancy but the prognosis did not sound good, as it was in its last stage.

Hi Craig. My 77 year old mother has lung cancer and also has end stage COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Since she's already so ill and frail (4 11", 78 pounds and on oxygen 24/7), the doctors said there is no use treating the lung cancer (she couldn't withstand the side effects). The reason I'm telling you this is I have been my Mom's caregiver for the past 18 months and wouldn't trade that for anything. To be able to be with her and make her days the happiest they can be even though I can't change her physical challenges is something that I will always be grateful for. It's hard not to able to fix things for those that we love and the pain and challenges are sometimes immense. But what we can do as adult children of ailing parents is to be there for them offering companionship, love and support. I wouldn't trade my Mom's smile after I've washed and styled her hair while enjoying a nice glass of wine together for anything. It's the quality of life now that counts. You're doing the right thing and you are not alone. You will never regret it. Good luck to you and your family.
