Unrelated donor Bone marrow transplantation in relapsed AML

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Mar 31, 2002 6:50 pm

My sister has aml and recently relapsed.
Chemotherapy has put her in remission again and her Doctor recommends a Bone Marrow transplant. Unfortunately she has no sibling that matched and her doctor wants to use a matched unrelated donor.
My sister has reacted badly to blood transfusions several times and must receive prednisone, antihistamine epinephrine and lasix before transfusion and this prevents the reaction. I am concerned that she may also react to the donors marrow and it would be too late? Is this a real possibility? Is there a way to predetermine if this will occur?
What is the survival rate for a transplant from an unrelated donor?
She is a diabetic and I would like to know if she will have problems controlling her blood glucose if she's receiving anti-rejection drugs?
I wonder if it is possible to treat her with high dose chemotherapy and prolong her life? Perhaps also monoclonal antibodies and interleukin etc if available? I believe that she will not survive the bone marrow transplant and I believe her doctors are scepticalalso. Are there any doctors who are using chemotherapy alone for treatment of relapsed AML?(my sister is 43 years old) I appreciate your help. Thanks, Louise Piper
