My Dad has CLL and it wasn't treated until very severe. His white count was 277 his red count was 4. He was given 6 blood transfusions which now has his red count around 10. The doctors are now wanting to give him chemo. He has been in the hospital now 4 days, we are new to all this but are wondering if chemo is the right way to go. Also a family member has stored "Cord Blood" from the birth of 4 infant grandkids , when we mentioned this to the doctor he said it wasn't an option, is anyone familiar with this procedure, any help or info would be greatly appreciated. We are lost as to what to do, after the transfusions he is much better, but will the chemo do more harm than good? please help

As i have read your subject, see what is more compliction in CLL or with the Leukaemia is the imbalance condition of blood cell , as you mentioned the count of your father, in chemotharepy ,the process called the chemo , i believe that you are aware of how it funtions or how it impact the blood tissues.
Let me explain ,: well in case of leukaemia we find exess amount of WBC in their im -mature form comparatively their other counterparts like RBC and Pletlets. So while we cure this desiese n form of chemo it means it works like bomb it kills WBC for sure but it kills RBC and Pletlets and also has very negative impact on other organs as well like liver which get affect more.
Then we infuse RBC and pletlets to fullfill the bodies demand.

I believe as you know also that chemo is very painfull process and you are aware of truth also.I don't know the stage of your father problem as yet so it is hard to comment on.

Let me ask you one thing if you find something like miracle in this universe,which can cure this leukaemia in very construtive or painless manner , and which controls all its cause roots like imbalnce blood ( WBC,RBC and Pletlets) with no side effect . what would be your reaction .
I know it is not disgestive comment but if you find something which you can take with the regular treatment , and yet effective then what would be your reaction.

I also was told cord blood was not an option, was not told why, so we did not save my grandson's cord blood.
I was at the Dr today and a lady sat by me and told me the following :she was diagnosed in 1991 with CLL, no treatments, wait and see approach, got very ill in 2000, came close to death and she was given a new drug, IV, one time a week, she has had 300 of these, no side effects such as nausea, hair loss, neuropathy, mouth sores etc all the bad things from chemo. She is doing great and looks heathy and feels healthy. the drug was called "retustin" sound spelling, not sure of correct spelling. It sounded very promising. Every day there is a new less harmful treatment option or so it seems.
