CMV and stem cell transplant

My dad is day 67 post transplant. Tested neg. for CMV before transplant but tested positive today. He has been started on GancylovirIV to be given 14 days. How serious is this? He has a clear chest x-ray 3 days ago. If you catch CMV early enough does that decrease your mortality rate?
