Can a renal cyst turn into a tumor?I am a 23 yr old female. Last year I went to the emergency room with severe back pain in the right side of my back. I had a 103 degree temp and bad chills. After a CT Scan was completed, they found a simple cyst in my right kidney about the size of a golf ball. They sent me home and tole me to get a follow up CT in about a year. Well about 3 weeks ago, i went for my follow up. They completed 2 CTs, one with and one without contrast. They also did an ultrasound. After all 3 tests, it was confirmed that i had a solid mass 6cm in my right kidney. I went to the urologist yesterday and he is ordering an MRI to get a better look at it. He was the same urologist that told me that it was a cyst last year. The way he explained it is that the cyst has grown and mutated into something abnormal (which could possibly be a tumor). That's why he ordered the MRI to get a better view. So my question is, Can a renal cyst turn into a tumor or solid mass? I cannot find anything that provides credit to this statement. Has anyone ever dealt with this?
Re: Can a renal cyst turn into a tumor?whitney, the same thing happened to my husband. at first they thought it was cysts. a year later it was cancer. they removed his left kidney 3 months ago. last month a cyst in his right kidney has now tripled in size and has turned in to a mass. his surgery is next week. hopefully it is not cancer. will let u know. how r u doing?
