Affects of Strep A on Your KidneysI am a 30 year old female. Last summer I got Strep A, the flesh-eating strep. Since then, I have kept a kidney infection. Sometimes it clears up, but then it comes right back. I've had several CAT Scans, abdominal ultrasounds, an IVP, etc. Some show kidney stones and some say that it is just a flebolist (sp)?
Problem is that I have constant hematuria and low grade temp (about 100) and the urologist I went to doesn't recommend trying to go in and retrieve this because he firmly believes it is a benign type of thing. I am working with a new internist and the question has arisen whether there may be strep located in my kidney. Is that possible? If the Strep A germ had a negative impact on my kidneys, what would the outcome be? I am concerned because my pain is increasing and I constantly feel miserable. Also, my great grandmother died of kidney cancer Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Affects of Strep A on Your KidneysChronic bacterial infection (from many organisms) can occur in a kidney, especially if there is any obstruction to flow or a stone present. Strep A as the cause of a kidney infection would be very unusual, in my experience. If your current urologist is not making any progress and there is ample evidence that infection and stone are present, a second opinion from a stone expert at a major medical center is a good idea.
