Oro pharynx cancer and HPV by oral sex?

Post a new topicby Palspar on Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:19 am

Hi, I'm a 62 yr old norwegian male who had a oro pharynx cancer at the back of my tongue right across my throat, back in 2002. It was in the last stage T4 and it couldn't be operated upon so it had to be radiated.

I underwent heavy radiation treatment during 6 weeks and luckily I was 50 kgs overweight so I had something to "live" upon since I couldnt intake much food due to very sore throat I'm now considered symptom free from the disease.

I tried to ask the doctors what the cause of this disease was, but they couldnt give me any clue. Since I dont smoke, I hadnt done that for nearly 40 years; and I'm a very modest drinker, I cannot find any plausible cause. Then it hit me.

I have been quite active with the ladies and giving oral sex to them during the years. I have read that this HPV can cause cancer in the vagina, can this be true for the oro pharynx too?

Anyone out there know anything about this matter?

There is much research regarding the link between HPV and oropharnyx (sp?) cancer. Do a search on the internet and you will find out more information. It is even discussed on the American Cancer Society website.

It is true that HPV has a strong association with cervical cancer, but its association with oropharyngeal cancer is still being researched. You bring up a great question as HPV vaccination is now being recommened for all women because of cervical cancer. Rohit Soans

Ok, thanks for yr reply. I've allways wondered why I was "selected" for this kind of cancer since I don't smoke, drink very moderately, and don't work in polluted surroundings, and as far as I could recall my family, though having had several other cancer illnesses, neither have had head or neck cancer.

But, then again, the genes is another matter besides the HPV issue, I reckon?

Thanks again.

I may be a good candidate for this research. I am an otherwise very healthy male in mid-40's with no cancer in my family. I have never smoked. I do drink socially; but, wouldnt classify as a heavy drinker. I have healthy blood, low blood pressure, normal heart rate. The only negative would be that my cholestrol is a little high. I have a high tech exec job; so, I am not exposed to anything dangerous.

Last week I was diagnosed with Metastatic Squamous Neck Cancer by proof of needle biopsy. I still have more tests coming in the next couple of weeks to figure out origin and how advanced it is.

So, I have too been trying to figure out what could have kicked this off. I remembered yesterday, and confirmed today, that a lady I frequently performed oral sex for was tested positive for HPV a while back. Subsequently, she was tested negative. We will be taking her med records into my doctor this week.

Cheers,

I cross my fingers for you!

And to the forever question about wether HPV causes Head and Mouth Cancer or not; wouldnt it be very scary indeed if the science community after all their denials did find a connection, however small and insignificant?

And that could be related to Oral sex?

Goodbye family bliss.
