Breast Implants - MRI or Mammography?

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Apr 23, 2002 2:45 pm

I have breast implants and am very concerned that the compression involved with mammography could cause one or both to rupture (I did have one implant rupture before - not due to mammography - which I had to have replaced). I'm also concerned that the implant would pose the same problem as dense tissue in breasts. Wouldn't MRI be a better alternative for women with implants? Or is there another solution?

We deal with women with breast implants all the time, and we do it in a very systematic way. First we do images to look for possible leaks using only very gentle compression. If those images are okay, we go again and do the films that best show the breast tissue. I believe that mammography is still the gold standard for breast imaging, though MRI is very useful in certain circumstances.
