Adenocarcinoma vs Carcinoid

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Dec 09, 2001 7:04 pm

Recently a diagnosis was made of Adenocarinoma (stage IV) of the Colon. During emergency surgery a tumor was removed -- a 6 cm mass in the appenidix/cecum area. Is there a way to best determin it's origin (I assume this effects the nature of treatment?) They removed what they could but the abdomin/bowels are spotty & 5 nodes in bowel were affected as well. Wondering if the diagnosis of Adenocarcinoma could actually be a carcinoid type of cancer -- does biopsy clarify the differences in cell structure, etc? ...any thoughts in regards to getting a second opinion and how to find a specialist due to the stage of the disease.

Pathologically there are ways to determine if it is a carcinoid. I would suggest speaking with the physician and seeing if the studies could be done so that you feel comfortable with the diagnosis. Thank you for using oncologychannel and good luck.
