chemotherapy/ovarian cancer

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Sep 21, 2001 10:33 pm

I have a sister with ovarian cancer and since the first of june have been investigating and reading exhaustively.
Although I am grateful that the regiment of Taxol/carboplatin exists that can shrink a cancer mass, I must say that I am not reassured by both cancer surgeons who boast that"we know alot about these(ovarian)cancers". This is only of academic use and is pointless to a patient. My question is why once a chemo regiment has finished, along with the cancer surgery, that a patient is then left to wait-with no further therapy to either boost the immune system and keep down the regrowth of new cancer cells and lengthen the disease-free period. And they wait, completely naked and unprotected. This is why I undertook an exhaustive search and came upon the name of Mr.John Boik, a superlative scholar and researcher in the use of natural herbal compounds within cancer therapy. Here I came upon a nontoxic regiment that when carefully applied can give a measure of protection to a patient.
Your comments please, would be greatly appreciated.
Yours truly

I am not clear to what you wish me to addres my comments. I would like to know what type of herbal therapy you are referring to and what the claims made about the product are. Also I would like to see whatever "scientific" data vis a vie clinical trials there are on the product which substantiate the claims made. In general there is no known product available which can be proven via rigorous scientific trials to enhance the immune system. The closest which I know of is MGN3 which has good data from the bench to show it can boost the immune system but which has never been shown to do the same in humans and has never been shown to improve disease free survival or time to progression or overall survival. Thank you for using oncologychannel and good luck.

Thank you for your reply and the following are some comments I must make.
I recommend to any physician who has a serious interest in the use of herbal compounds within cancer therapy to purchase John Boik's latest reference work. Mr. Boik does not make "claims" within his book but rather seriously undertakes the potential for their use based on available research. The lack of clinical trials can be wholly blamed on the disdane North American science has had because herbals have been stygmatized. John Boik is commencing the first clinical trials with a colleague at M.D. Anderson. To pick up on one point, in fact, interleukin 2 along with other cytokines are in use as immunotherapy in some hospitals and evidence has shown that certain herbals, Astragalus to name just one, stimulates production of the bodies own cytokines.
Until such time that a clinically proven herbal regiment is made available or an effective cancer vaccine is available an herbal regiment as suggested by Mr. Boik is all that we have.

With kind regards.
