Cervix and Pregnancy

Post a new topicby bmflynn16 on Tue Aug 14, 2007 5:53 pm

Hi,

I have a serious question and haven’t been able to find the answer online or through friends of mine that are nurses. Currently, I’m in the early stages of Cervical Cancer and my doctor said I can continue the treatments and surgeries or I could have my cervix out. I was also diagnosed with PCOS and four of my sisters have had difficulties getting and staying pregnant. My questions are:

1. Can you get pregnant without a cervix?
2. Can you have the baby without a cervix?

Hopefully someone will know the answer. Thanks!

First women with PCOS have a high degree of infertility. One of the reasons to loose a pregnancy is an incompetent cervix, in fact some women's doctors may put a surgical suture around an incompetent cervix so the baby will not be lost. Thus, although I am not a gynecologist I don't believe you could stay pregnant without a cervix. Since the cervix represents a barrier to sperm I would imagine that you could get pregnant without one, but these are all questions you should ask your GYN
