The “C” word and the grace of the man going through it.

My husband of 23 years was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer at the end of April,2007. He went through his chemo and radiation like a real trooper. He amazed the doctors through all of his treatments and told them he was going to beat this. When we first found out he had a mass is his chest about 12 inches by 9 inches. The doctors said he had the strongest treatment known to man. We were so elated when we found out the cancer was gone, out of his chest and lungs.
Mike’s only 48, a won...Read the full article

Stacy you are a very powerful woman. It's not my spouse but my sister we are supporting. She to has lung cancer - doctors thought it was infection. Over 7 months later we find out they were wrong. She was told on December 28th, 2007 that it has now spread to multiple areas of her lungs, her bones and multiple brain areas. She began her (what the doctors call) end of life treatment. She started her 10 days of radiation of the whole head yesterday, January 9th. She is 51yrs old, 9 years my elder. She is the idol of my life. Your post has made me look at things differently. I was going thru the pity me phase but after reading your thoughts I have realized how lucky I am to have had her as my sister. The person I am today is directly related to her. It has and is a priviledge to take my turn to help her now. Thank you so much for your post. My prayers are with you and your family.

How is your husband doing? My heart goes out to you. I recently went through a similiar situation with my father. It's all very confusing and painful. I will keep your family in my prayers.

Thank you for the prayers so much. Michael is holding his own, but i see him getting weaker and weaker. Cornered the Hospice nurse, who is absolutely wonderful but told her to make sure to tell me everything, i do better if i know things even if they make me cry. She said in the past couple of weeks with him getting so weak that she would not be surprised if he was gone in 3 or 4 weeks and might not be surprised if he was gone by the end of the month. The end of the month is his Birthday but somehow, some way we will get through this. Thanks so much again for the prayers.

I will keep your sister in my prayers as well. If my words have helped you through this time i am so greatful that it did. Like i said there is no certain way to go through and handle this. So hard to see what cancer can do to the people you love. Hang in there, i know its so hard, so very hard, i do feel like im falling apart every second but you do it not because you have to but you do it out of love and mike like your sister has truly blessed me and i am proud and honored to be able to take care of him at his time of need. God bless you!!!!!

Update on Michael.

We are now down to a week or two the nurses think. Mike has not eaten in aobut 8 days now, only a couple of bites every now and then. Yesterday was his 49th birthday. He is so weak and tired but still not complaining and still of sound mind and when he does talk, which is not much, he is still trying to make sure that everything is in place for us after he is gone. Its very hard to watch him go through this. He has now lost about 100 lbs altogether, and he did not need to lose any to begin with. I have been so truly blessed for him to be in my life, truly blessed. If your reading this, please say a prayer that he passes peacefully. There really needs to be more people in the world like him.

Stacy,
My prayers will continue to be with you and your family. This quote has helped my sister and I so I will pass it along. "It doesn't matter what lies behind us, it doesn't matter what lies ahead of us, it only matters what lies within us."
God Bless

Michael lost his courageous battle with his cancer at 1:35 in the morning on Feb 8th,2008. Saddenly it was only about 9 months after his first diagnosis. He was such a wonderful man and so courageous through all of this. I was right beside him in our bed, telling him when he saw the Angel's grab hold and hang on, just grab hold and hang on baby. Michael's brother and sister and their spouses and our daughter's were all right here with him. We have had the wake and the funeral and I am so wonderfully blessed at the outpour of love and emotion for Michael and our whole family. Sometimes we never realize how blessed we are til the ones we love are gone, but fortunately I have always known that we were blessed because God gave him to me and our girls. For anyone reading this, take time to tell someone that you love how much they truly mean to you and the impact they have on your lives. May God bless you all. Stacy
