? Bladder Cancer

Post a new topicby Maria on Fri Sep 21, 2007 8:29 pm

I have seen very small amount of blood in my urine for the past 3 - 4 months and assumed it was related to light periods and menopause symptoms. 3 weeks ago I again assumed I was heaving a very heavy period and when I started to use sanitary protection it proved clear. My doctor did a urine test and prescribed antibiotics for an infection. I had no blood in urine for around one week. When it returned I seen a urologist I have little pain, he ‘thinks’ it is bladder cancer. He will do a cystoscopy and scan.
A urine sample was sent to the lab and since then my doctor has recommended a biopsy.
I have seen a gynecologist who found no problems.
I have never had any problems before; I am 50 year old female. I can't get the tests done until next week. I have not been able to eat all day as I am sick with worry.
It would help if I knew what the procedure was for these tests, and how long do you wait for the results and the biopsy results. Are the tests an inpatient or outpatient?
Thank you in advance for your replies.
PS.......thanks for this forum!

Most bladder cancer is superficial (not invading the muscle)and curable by resecting it with a cystoscope which is placed through your urethra while you are under anesthesia. If the tumor is small you will probable go home the same day, otherwise you may stay overnight. Pathology results usually take about three days to get back sometimes up to 5 days. You should do fine , if you smoke you should stop since smoking is the leading cause of bladder cancer, good luck.

Thank you for your reply.
If any of you have had this done can you explain to me how long this type of biopsy / cysto procedure takes and what to expect after. Any information will help ease my worries.

Usually a short time in OR and then recovery and then home. You may come home with a catherter, which you can usually take out after a few days at home.
